How to use this roofing calculator
- Measure your roof footprint. Walk the ground-level perimeter of your house and measure length and width. For an L-shaped house, split it into two rectangles and add the results together at the end.
- Pick your pitch. A 6/12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. If you don’t know, 6/12 is the most common for US residential homes. Steeper pitches (8/12+) add significantly to cost because of labor time and safety equipment.
