How to use this Mulch Calculator

1. Enter the length and width of the area you want to cover in feet. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles and calculate each section separately.
2. Select the depth — 3 inches is the standard recommended depth for wood mulch in garden beds. Deeper mulch suppresses weeds more effectively but can suffocate plant roots if applied too close to stems.
3. Select the material type — the note below your results will adjust based on what you are installing.
4. Click Calculate Material Needed to see cubic yards, cubic feet, and the number of standard 2-cubic-foot bags needed.

Frequently asked questions

How much mulch do I need per cubic yard?

One cubic yard of mulch covers 108 square feet at 3 inches deep, 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, or 324 square feet at 1 inch deep. A standard pickup truck bed holds approximately 2 to 3 cubic yards of loose mulch. Bulk mulch delivered by a landscaping supplier is significantly cheaper per cubic yard than bagged mulch from a garden center.

How deep should I apply mulch?

The recommended depth for most landscape mulch applications is 2 to 4 inches. Three inches is the standard recommendation — deep enough to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture, but not so deep it creates a habitat for pests or suffocates plant roots. Keep mulch 2 to 3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot and disease.

What is the difference between cubic yards and cubic feet?

There are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard. Bulk landscaping materials like mulch, topsoil, and gravel are typically sold and priced by the cubic yard. Bagged products are sold by cubic feet — most standard bags are 1.5 or 2 cubic feet. When comparing prices, convert to the same unit before comparing cost per volume.

When should I replace mulch?

Wood mulch typically needs refreshing every one to two years as it breaks down and becomes part of the soil. Topping off with a one-inch layer each spring maintains coverage without building up excessive depth. Rubber mulch lasts much longer (10 or more years) but does not improve soil health the way organic mulch does.

Does mulch prevent weeds?

Yes — 3 or more inches of mulch significantly reduces weed germination by blocking sunlight from reaching the soil surface. For maximum weed control, apply a layer of landscape fabric or cardboard before mulching. Note that mulch does not eliminate existing weeds — remove them before applying mulch for best results.
